CHALIAN-ROCK Canis Major can be obediently seen in sky By Jim Newman Morning News The big dog has staked its territory in the southern sky during late evenings in February and brings with it open star clusters along with the brightest star in the heavens. There's no mistaking the constellation Canis Major, which can be seen obediently following in the footsteps of Orion the Hunter in tandem with the littler pup of the duo, Canis Minor. This part of the sky is dominated by Sirius at a magnitude of Sirius, often referred to as the Dog Star, isn't all that luminous. It's a Main Sequence star slightly hotter and bigger than the sun that just happens to lie near the solar system at only 8.6 light years away. That proximity is enough to make Sirius the night sky's brightest star.
Sirius also travels through space with a companion, a much smaller and denser star known as a white dwarf. Spotting 8.4 magnitude Sirius Bis a challenge in all but larger telescopes because of its parent's overpowering glare. The star's orbit also carries in and out of Sirius' fiery brilliance with a 50-year period that takes it in to three seconds of arc at its closest, then outward to almost 12 arc seconds at its widest separation. This gap is growing and will be greatest in 2019. Even so, the Sirius system DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH is a tough split in the best of conditions and typically requires at least a 6-inch telescope or larger to resolve.
About 4 degrees almost due south lies a collection of stars that spans an angular size larger than the full moon but lie so far away that together they form a combined glow of about fourth magnitude. That's more than enough to spot open star cluster M41 with the naked eye. On closer inspection, this object begins to take on a greater significance. Lowpower binoculars show it as a dim, nebulous smudge. But even a small backyard refractor will begin to resolve some of this cluster's more prominent stellar members.
Larger amateur scopes of 4-inch apertures and greater will reveal more. Another often-overlooked object is NGC 2362, an open star cluster dominated by the fourth magnitude star Tau Canis Majoris. The cluster appears tiny, only about eight minutes of arc in extent and is peppered with many dimmer stars that make an interesting contrast with much brighter Tau Canis Majoris. A 6-inch Criterion reflector can be used to observe NGC 2362; however, the cluster still can be appreciated using smaller scopes. To find it, scan about 2.7 degrees northeast of Wesen (Delta Canis Majoris).
AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL BOARD Groups plan to fight Sanford's nominee The Associated Press GREENVILLE Some business and industry leaders oppose Gov. Mark Sanford's appointment to lead the state's environmental agency board, and he could face a difficult confirmation in the state Senate, one senator says. Edwin Cooper was appointed by Sanford to be the new chairman of the Department of Health and Environmental Control board. The agency oversees permitting for development projects and enforces environmental law. Lewis Gossett, executive director of the South Carolina Manufacturers' Alliance, said environmentalists have held the chairmanship for eight years, and Cooper will extend that.
"We'd like to see it more balanced," Gossett said. "We think that once again (Sanford) has delivered it to his friends on the environmental side. "It would be appropriate if someone with a manufacturing background sat in that seat." State Sen. Harvey Peeler, R-Gaffney, is chairman of the Senate Medical Affairs ComSanford mittee, which has oversight of DHEC. Peeler said Cooper's confirmation could be difficult.
"He has a lot of detractors," Peeler said. "We're trying to smooth things over now." The previous chairwoman, Elizabeth Hagood, resigned last year to become director of conservation programs for the Coastal Conservation League. Hagood, who previously 1 had served as vice chairman, followed Greenville environmentalist Brad Wyche.
